Shark Guardian has been wanting to visit Dubai for more than a year so were super excited to receive funding from Global Ocean UK Charity to allow our goal to be fulfilled. From 1st to 13th February 2014,  Shark Guardian will be visiting 13 different schools as well as presenting to the general public. Here is the first part of our trip: 7  schools, 12 presentations and 3000+ children now very excited and more knowledgeable about sharks!

Thanks to the Emirates Diving Association we were able to present to the home school group in the Vox cinema, Mercato Mall, Jumeirah. An amazing venue with a huge screen to show the beauty of our amazing sharks. Pupils, parents and friends joined this event and enjoyed learning about the apex predator of the ocean. This is also where we announced our competition for the tour: all students are encouraged to make a poster or picture to show their understanding of the importance of sharks and why we must protect them.

In the afternoon of the 3rd, the year 4 children from DESS were a fantastic crowd. They listened attentively to the new information and all were surprised to learn about the 29 species of sharks found in the waters of the UAE. The children could not wait to get their hands on the posters donated by IFAW International Fund for Animal Welfare: Sharks of the Arabian Gulf!

A trip to Sharjah on Wednesday 5th February

Brendon held 2 presentations at Our Own English School for Boys. Grade 7 and then 8, totaling 900 boys, were extremely enthusiastic for Brendon and he had a fabulous time. At the same time Liz did 4 short 30 minute presentations at the Gems Westminster School next door. Years 1 through to 9 certainly needed the education as there was definitely a huge misunderstanding about how many people are killed by sharks each year. Students guessing from 20 – 100 had thankfully changed their views by the end and everyone was much less scared of sharks!

Thursday 6th: Gems Royal Dubai School

Key Stage 2 presentation at GEMS Royal Dubai

Liz and Brendon were back in force to present 2 sessions at Gems Royal Dubai on Thursday 6th of February. First Key Stage 1 enjoyed learning about some of the shark species from the UAE. the 200+ crowd were very surprised to hear that so many sharks were in local waters.

After this, Key Stage 2 gave a great reception to Shark Guardian. This group was really excited to learn about the competition with the possibility of their poster going in a book to be presented to Sheikh Mohammed. We look forward to seeing these posters soon!

Shark Guardian finished part one of their tour at JESS. The year 7 students missed their normal science lessons to learn about the importance of sharks and why we must protect them. A fantastic audience with some intelligent questions at the end – again we look forward to receiving the competition entries from this group!
