Thai Airways announces ban on transport of Shark Fin!

A huge result for conservationists worldwide and in Thailand as Thai Airways finally release a statement to say they no longer transport shark fin. This follows other monumental announcements in the last month, most notably Singapore Airlines and Cebu Pacific. This is a great result for sharks and our oceans in general and a huge boost for Shark Guardian student ambassadors worldwide. The announcement follows a student petition to Thai Airways which may have been the push that was needed.

Shark Guardian part of coalition putting pressure on the Airlines

Since May 2014 Shark guardian have been part of a huge conservation push by wildlife campaigners and NGO’s. This has been led by Alex Hofford from Wildlife Risk and shows that airlines want to be seen as socially responsible in the huge shark fin industry which threatens shark populations worldwide.

24 Airlines have banned the transport of shark fin!

Thai Airways joins 23 other airlines who have committed themselves to remove shark fin from all their flights. Their announcement on 14th July from their Thai cargo in Australia was the starting point for the official announcement which came on the evening of the 29th of July:

Mr. Poonsak Chumchuay, Managing Director of Cargo and Commercial Mail Department at Thai Airways, said “since July 2014 the Company has communicated and implemented an official policy that prohibits the shipment of shark fin on board THAI Cargo”. The internal announcement was sent to all THAI operating stations to comply with the recent policy.

“As part of the world community sharing in the great concern for the protection of endangered species and the environment, Thai Airways International has implemented its own official policy to place an embargo on the shipping of shark fin products on THAI.”

Who will be next?

Shark Guardian hope that Lion Air will join the list of airlines, given they operate within Indonesia which is well known as the worlds top shark finning nation. This would be a huge result for sharks. Sign and share this petition to keep the pressure on this airline! With pressure we really can make a difference – thanks as always for your support in such issues and well done to Ob Salyavath from Shrewsbury Bangkok International school for his commitment and enthusiasm in this mission.
