The Swim for Sharks event returns this April, bringing together ocean lovers, swimmers, divers, and conservation supporters for two inspiring days dedicated to shark protection and marine conservation.
Hosted by Shark Guardian in collaboration with Thai Whale Sharks, the event combines education, community action, and a unique open-water challenge in the beautiful waters around Koh Tao.
Whether you want to learn more about sharks, challenge yourself in the water, or simply support ocean conservation, this event offers something for everyone.
How Swim for Sharks started
In 2010, two scuba divers, Lara and Dan, created a swim around the island to raise awareness and funds for shark conservation. What began as a small idea between friends quickly grew into a community fundraising event and has since evolved into an international movement supporting the UK charity Shark Guardian.
Shark Education Evening – 24 April 2026
Before the swim, join us for a special Shark Education Evening dedicated to understanding sharks and the critical role they play in maintaining healthy oceans.
During the evening, Shark Guardian and Thai Whale Sharks will host engaging talks and discussions exploring:
Why sharks are essential to ocean ecosystems
The threats sharks face today
How communities and individuals can help protect them
This event is the perfect opportunity to learn more about sharks, connect with fellow ocean enthusiasts, and get inspired before taking part in the swim the following day.
The Swim for Sharks Challenge – 25 April
On 25 April, participants will take on the 3.4 km Swim for Sharks challenge, inspired by the original swim around Koh Nang Yuan. To make the event accessible to as many people as possible, there are several ways to take part:
Competitive Swim: Participants swim the full 3.4 km distance as an individual challenge.
Fun Swim / Snorkel: Participants complete the same distance while using snorkel gear, making it more accessible and enjoyable for those who prefer a relaxed pace.
Whether you're an experienced swimmer, a confident snorkeller, or simply passionate about ocean conservation, everyone is welcome to join the adventure.

Supporting Shark Conservation
Funds raised from this year’s event will support both Shark Guardian and the Thai Whale Sharks project based on Koh Tao.
The Thai Whale Sharks initiative has been running since 2017, collecting whale shark sighting reports from divers and ocean lovers through citizen science. These valuable records help researchers track whale shark appearances in Thai waters and understand seasonal patterns.
The project is now expanding into tagging research, which will allow scientists to better understand:
Whale shark migration routes
Habitat use
Regional movement patterns
This research is critical for protecting these gentle giants, and community-driven fundraising plays a vital role in making it possible.
Funds will also support Shark Guardian’s wider work, including:
